Off The Grid Getaway: Utopian Paradise Does Exist In Texas
When I first moved down here in 2007, I learned quickly that people living in Texas vacation in Texas. Seemed a little odd to me that nobody ever want to leave this massive sized state. Fast forward 10 years, and I am now that guy. I completely understand why because the truth is that the Texas Hill Country has many symptoms of being paradise. Especially in Utopia, which may be the best name of a town ever, and when you visit, you will believe it is the real Utopia.
I recently took a weekend trip out to Utopia Springs Vacation Rental, sitting in between Utopia & Vanderpool, Texas. As we made our way into town, we stumbled onto our first Utopian gem, the Laurel Tree Restaurant. If you are unfamiliar with the Laurel Tree, just watch the TV show Treehouse Masters. The Laurel Tree has a treehouse dining room made by the team of Pete Nelson. While that was cool to see, we needed to make our way to the property to get settled in. As we turned off the main road, and found our way through the winding dirt roads up to the house, we finally landed at our weekend retreat. As we walked in, I was greeted with Outlaw Country playing in the house, which made me feel right at home since that's pretty much playing 24/7 in my house. After unpacking, we took a walk out back and found a little slice of Texas paradise, or as I refer in the video, this is God's country. A path and some stairs lead you down to the Sabinal River, where the property has its own built in water fall and natural spring. The water was maybe 75 degrees and felt incredible after being in the June Texas heat all afternoon.
The house itself is a beautiful and cozy place that feels like home. With 4 bedroom / 2.5 bath, and all of the amenities that help a person to relax off the grid for a few days. Seriously, our cell phone service was non existent, which may have been the best part of the weekend. It was an opportunity to completely disconnect from the chaos of this crazy world for a few days. Something every person should experience from time to time. While off the grid, we had plenty of things to do. For one, my primary goal was to play my guitar and relax. With two hammocks on the back porch, I had the perfect spot to sit and strum, while hearing the flowing river in the background. When it was time to cook, I had a BBQ pit and a fire pit to decide between. I chose cooking over an open flame, with some ice cold Lone Star beers all while jamming along to my Spotify playlists crafted special for the weekend in paradise. You know, some good ol' Margo Price, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Lilly Hiatt, Lindi Ortega, Kacey Musgraves, Mike & the Moonpies to name a few.
Our first night greeted us with an early and brief 4am thunder storm. Water was coming down in buckets, and the sounds put me back to sleeping like a baby. As soon as the rain stopped, I made my way out to finish my night of rest in one of the hammocks overlooking the river. After a few hours, of chill time, it was up and making some hill country migas breakfast tacos. I mean, it is Texas, we eat breakfast tacos as our breakfast staple. And not for nothin', but I make some killer migas tacos with jalapeno sausage and fresh grilled corn pico.
That night, our host Jada took my son and I 15 miles outside of Utopia to the tiny town of Tarpley, where we were introduced to Mac & Ernies Roadside Eatery. This popular roadside eatery was made famous in the very first ever pilot episode of Diners, Drive Ins, & Dives. Guy Fieri knew exactly what he was doing including
this in his inaugural episode. From the insane crab cakes to the juicy ancho honey basted quail, this place hit the spot. And I am pretty sure our friend Jada was the most popular person in the place, which made the experience even more badass as we had so much attention and free access to film whatever we wanted.
The weekend ended, and we came home perfectly rested and motivated to get back to the real world. Jada was an amazing host, and I highly recommend you book her families Utopia Springs property through AirBnB, VRBO, or contact them directly through the link below. And I also have to throw in a special shout out to Marley the Dog. That dog won me over in all of about 2 seconds. Vacationing at Utopia Springs will leave you feeling replenished, along with giving you a true appreciation for the beauty of nature. It is a little slice of paradise!!!
