I just spent 2 out of the last 3 weeks enjoying my version of spring break in the Texas Hill Country. I spent the first week of the trip in the town of Round Rock, Texas, about 20 miles north of Austin. With the city of Austin being jam packed during SXSW, I decided to grab a hotel in Round Rock to allow me a chance to recover from the chaos of taking place in downtown Austin. Let me tell you, that was a great decision, because it kept me chill & relaxed. Round Rock is a cool suburb of Austin that boasts the character of Austin, without all of the hustle & bustle of the growing city.
As I pulled into my hotel, the first thing I noticed in front of the Courtyard was Jack Allen's Kitchen, Hopdoddy Burger Bar & a Mellow Mushroom Pizza all just steps away from my hotel. Instantly, I fell in love, because all 3 spots have delicious bites that I crave. While I was excited to try all 3 places near my hotel, my visit in Round Rock was all about two places that understand the concept of Hungry Outlaw all too well:
Round Rock Donuts & Piranha Records
The main reason I chose Round Rock was so that I could finally get a chance to try the world famous Round Rock Donuts, brought into the national spotlight from Man vs Food, when they featured their insanely monstrous Texas Sized Glazed Donut. To see it is nothing short of impressive. To taste it is even better. However, I was rolling solo, so no massive sized donut for me. Instead, I enjoyed a bag of donut holes & a rather large Cinnamon Roll. To see more on the visit with Round Rock Donuts, click play on the embedded video. They absolutely deserve the attention, because these are truly some killer donuts. Its the perfect spot to pick up breakfast on the go.
Since Hungry Outlaw is also about great music & a funky vibe,
Piranha Records is easily one of the most funky & awesome record stores in Texas. The owner, John Aleman & his staff take pride in knowing they have the funkiest vinyl in town. Everything from Parliament to Curtis Mayfield, & everything in between. I picked up some Funkadelic, Kid Rock, Dale Watson, & a Gregg Allman live album. They have the ultimate collection of vinyl, cd's, & any other form of music you desire. They also have one of the strongest selections of great music I have ever seen in
a record store. During my first visit, I realized I left my belt at home. John even had a section with belts that helped me out in a huge way, otherwise, I would've been walking around SXSW with my pants on the ground. Whether you are into vinyl, cd's, blu rays, or whatever, Piranha is the spot to hit when you are visiting the Austin area. It may just be the coolest place in Round Rock, Texas. Be sure to make that one of your stops for National Record Store Day on April 16th. It will be easy to spend 2 to 3 hours digging through their intense collection of badass music.
